Tonight, January 15th, get ready for a double dose of indie rock excess when local favorites MyNameIsJohnMichael and Big Rock Candy Mountain take the stage at One Eyed Jacks. The show, which will be presented by the Aquarium Drunkard, will kick of at 10:00pm - doors at 9:00pm. In addition to being MNIJM’s first show of 2010, the boys will also be premiering their recently completed video for “Every Night of the Year.” As for BRCM, this will be their last local show for a while as they’re all set to hit the road on a West Coast tour. So come out, show your support, get retarded, and send them off right!

A few days ago – of course, where else but on twitter – I came across Jambase’s review of local pop progsters Big Rock Candy Mountain’s debut album Hey Kid. Previously, in Offbeat magazine I too bestowed similar praise upon the group (so I’m pretty high on them), but I had yet to see them live since their performance at the New Orleans Indie Rock Fest several months earlier. That was until a few weeks ago when I caught Big Rock (@brcm for the tweeps out there) alongside fellow Nola indie favorites Rotary Downs at d.b.a. Surprisingly, when I got to the Frenchman St. watering hole, which typically plays host to the jazz/funk/blues crowd, a sizable crew had already amassed within the venue. After scoring a beer, I squeezed into the front corner of the room and waited for the band to take the stage. A large part of me didn’t know what to expect. Anxious, my mind drifted. I wondered if BRCM could match the raucous histrionics of their album in concert.

While many may know New Orleans as the birthplace of jazz, the funkiest city on earth, and the “chocolate city” (thanks to C. Ray, our douchebag of a mayor), many don’t think of it as the home to one of the most progressive indie scene in the US.  Well, there’s something new brewing down here in the delta, and the New Orleans Indie Rock Collective is busy stirring up the pot.  The NOIRC is a one-of-a-kind, grass organization that fosters the development of and creates awareness about the burgeoning NOLA indie music scene.  And they actually get shit done (collectively)… unlike our local bureaucrats!  Apart from producing kickass compilation albums featuring the local talent, they host a biannual showcase.  Last weekend (March 5th-7th), I attended the second New Orleans Indie Rock Fest to sample the cookin’ from the underground.

New Orleans based gonzo rockers Big Rock Candy Mountain have released  their new EP, Oh Snap… Mah Back, for free on their website.  A nerve-wracking amalgam of lo-fi, hysteria and high-flying histrionics, this prog-pop treat is sure to drive you batty… and straight to the dance floor.  And for all you like-minded comrades out there in the Big Easy, you can catch BRCM along with many other frenzied do-it-yourselfers live this weekend at the NOLA Indie Rock Fest II.
