Halloween night at
Voodoo Fest certainly got hotter than hell. When I woke up the next morning, my soul was in need of cleansing – not to mention my body! After slogging through the pits of City Park for the last few days, I felt as if I were permanently encrusted in mud. But the sun shone a little brighter on All Saints’ Day, and the ground seemed a little (ahem… a little) drier. When I got to the grounds, my first stop was at the Preservation Hall Tent where slide guitarist
John Mooney and his outfit
Bluesiana held service. There’s nothing like the blues on Sunday in New Orleans – especially after a long Saturday night. And few do it better than Mooney, a disciple of delta blues legend Son House, who mixes a swinging secondline groove into his spirited slide boogie. Despite having broken three bones in his picking hand and wrist the night before, Mooney, wearing a large cast, delivered one of the powerful sets of the weekend. Next, I headed to the Playstation Stage to catch the iconic, Celtic punk of
The Pogues. Their rowdy, roiling jigs drew an ecstatic response from the crowd. I know a second ago I said that I was in need of some soul purification… but with The Pogues on stage, I couldn’t help but grab a beer.
