For many, Christmas is the biggest holiday of they year, but for New Orleans music aficionados and funk fans ‘round the globe December 26th – not the 25th – is the holiday that they look forward to the most. No, I’m not referring to Boxing Day! I’m referring the birth of the funkiest bass player in the history of music… none other than New Orleans’ own
George Porter Jr.
Each year, the
Howlin’ Wolf hosts a celebration in honor of the renowned bassman, and each year, Porter treats his guests to an evening full of birthday surprises. Last year, Porter celebrated his 60th birthday with a party that was larger and livelier than any of its predecessors. One of last year’s highlights was a small set from George and his
Runnin’ Pardners, his main project during the 90s. This year, for George’s 61st, the group took center stage and delivered a marathon jam session filled with brawny funk, soulful R&B, and many welcomed twists and turns.
