It is difficult explaining a political position in this day and age, especially in the United States. Political divisions run so deep that a casual conversation can escalate into a fight rapidly. And social media has all of us demanding instant gratification. If you have to sit there explaining your political position in detail, you will likely lose people’s attention.
We need thinkers and activists like Thor Halvorssen who are not afraid to stand for something intricate. The 39-year-old founder of the Human Rights Foundation keeps a unique political perspective that drives his activism. You see, the man does not care if you lean left or right politically. He only cares about the conditions that can lead to human rights violations.
This intricate political stance confused Fox News. The conservative news program brought the human rights activist onto a television show for an interview. The subject of the interview was why the platform of then presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was evil. More precisely, the interview revolved around why socialism, in itself, is a violation of human rights.
According to Crunchbase, you can tell right off the bat that Thor Halvorssen is incredibly confused. He gets asked the question, a stunned look comes over his face, and then he gets to work explaining his position. The 39-year-old human rights activist calmly explains that socialism is not evil nor does it violate human rights. He even produces examples of democratic socialist governments that do right by their people, including Denmark, Sweden, and Finland.
That is when the interviewer gets confused. He continues to poke Thor Halvorssen, trying to get him to say that socialism is a violation of human rights. But the calm founder of the Human Rights Foundation continues to articulate that socialism in itself is not evil. Read more: Thor Halvorssen | Facebook
It is a lack of transparency, no separation of powers, and a government absent of checks and balances that produces unilateral power. And unilateral dictatorships are where you find the most human rights violations. It does not matter if that dictator labels himself a socialist, capitalist, or fascist.
It feels good to know people like Thor Halvorssen are out there. They are getting their hands dirty in the trenches trying to understand the world and to make it a better place. It is bold to stand up for a political stance that is difficult to understand. I hope that Thor Halvorssen and the Human Rights Foundation continues to work long into the future.
